English (ESL) Instructor for Seniors (55+)
Position Role Description
The Shawnee Evergreen Community Association is seeking an English as a Second Language (ESL) Instructor to lead classes for seniors aged 55+ from diverse backgrounds. Participants are typically beginner to low-intermediate learners, with some returning participants.
The ideal candidate will be passionate about helping seniors build confidence in their English skills in a supportive, low-pressure environment.
Position Details:
Contract Duration: 12 classes
Schedule: Thursdays, 9:15 – 10:45 AM (Exact start date to be determined. Classes are expected to run between September and December 2026, with dates flexible based on instructor availability.)
Location: Peace Lutheran Church, 14640 6 St SW, Calgary
Compensation: $125 per class (inclusive of preparation time, materials, and applicable taxes)
Class Structure (1.5 hours total): 1 hour of group instruction 30 minutes of one-on-one support as needed
Classroom Details:
This is a low-tech classroom environment. There is no computer screen or projector available. All instruction must be conducted using a wipe board and printed handouts.
The instructor is required to:
- Bring their own wipe board markers
- Provide printed materials for up to 15 students per class
Responsibilities:

Develop and implement lesson plans tailored to beginner to low-intermediate English learners

Adapt lessons to accommodate varying levels of proficiency

Deliver practical, conversation-focused learning

Foster a positive, inclusive classroom environment that encourages participation and builds confidence

Use diverse, non-digital teaching methods to support different learning styles

Track and submit attendance for each class (template provided)

Provide class handouts for up to 15 students
Requirements:

Strong passion for teaching and helping others succeed

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Experience teaching English as a second language is preferred

TESOL or CELTA certification is an asset

Ability to adapt lessons to meet the needs of diverse learners

Comfortable delivering engaging lessons without digital tools

Experience working with seniors or adult learners is an asset

This role is ideal for someone who is patient, encouraging, and enjoys building relationships with older adults in a community-based setting.
